The Story Behind the Placenta Smoothie | Why?

I know you’ve been asking for it so here it is: the secret recipe behind my yummy placenta smoothie! In this vlog I’m joined by my doula Irina Otmakhova who actually shared with me this delicious recipe I’ve been indulging myself with for the past weeks. You might think that your placenta is just a bloody mess after giving birth but you can actually get so much nutrients from it after—all you need to do is find a clever way of ingesting it again for your body to enjoy!

Irina explains that your placenta actually helps you a lot during your pregnancy. It produces stress-fighting hormones do you can deal with all the emotions you’re going through when you’re pregnant, so when you give birth to it (along with your baby!) your body takes time to adjust since you lost this important coping mechanism inside yourself. It is also rich in iron so it can help blood loss, too! Irina even has clients who have asked to have their placenta encapsulated. I have friends who were able to fight post-partum depression by popping a placenta pill!

To make the most of my placenta, Irina shared with me two smoothie recipes: one is the weirdest mix she’s come up with so far, and the second is my preferred recipe I’ve been drinking. The trick is that the smoothie should come out predominantly red since you’re mixing your placenta in it. Here are the ingredients for the weird smoothie:

  • 1 Mango
  • Prunes
  • Bottle of yogurt
  • Water
  • Chunk of your placenta

This simple recipe was actually pretty good! Remember though, you can’t share your placenta smoothie with anyone! Next, Irina and I made my go-to recipe! Here are the ingredients you need:

  • Mixed Berries
  • Bananas
  • Pineapple Juice
  • Ice Cream (strawberry or vanilla)
  • Chunk of your placenta
